The Fifty Best Catholic Movies of All Time

The best religious films, and therefore the best Catholic films, convey the great truths of Christianity implicitly rather than explicitly, not unlike the mystery of incarnation itself, in which the Word became flesh in the person of an obscure carpenter from a hick town in a minor province. In addition, this list consists primarily of films that deal with Catholic characters, Catholic society, and the Bible in ways that are not hostile to the Church. Most of them were made by Catholic directors. It is interesting to note that the three best directors who ever worked in Hollywood, Frank Capra, John Ford, and Alfred Hitchcock, were all practicing Catholics. So much for the detrimental effects in these times of the Church upon art.

St. Raphael.Net - Forum For Catholic Singles
St. Raphael is unlike any other Catholic singles site on the Internet. The reason we are so different is that we are not a "matchmaking" service. The purpose of our site is to provide single Catholics with a place to meet others and discern their vocation. Certainly many people use our service to meet Catholics for the purpose of dating, but we realize that God calls people to the religious and single life as well. St Raphael.net has brought people together for marriage, helped others towards the priesthood and religious life and given those leading a single vocation the opportunity to deepen an understanding of that calling.

Catholic Website - E3mil
e3mil was founded in February of 2000 by a team of professionals with vast experience in the areas of faith education, technology, customer service, marketing and media. e3mil seeks to use technology to form a worldwide community of Catholics on-line and provide them with a wholesome environment in which they can be instructed in areas of faith and morals, improve their lifestyle, shop, and be entertained and informed. In creating a unique online environment in which a broad range of users' needs are met, e3mil is rising to the challenge of penetrating and helping transform the culture by providing the Catholic Church with a powerful and attractive conduit to the masses.

Catholicity
Catholic2000.com was initially designed for people concerned about the Y2K computer problem. Besides providing links, Catholic2000.com provided email discussion groups where Catholics from around the world shared ideas, resources, and insights on making spiritual and material preparations for potential problems related to the computer threat.

Drudge Report

This is where my fascination with the Internet started --- the website that FIRST broke the "President Clinton Scandal". (Notice how I DIDN'T say the "Monica Lewinsky Scandal". For Pete's sake, folks, the guy was old enough to be her father!!)

Cybercast News Service
The Cybercast News Service was launched June 16, 1998 as a news source for individuals, news organizations and broadcasters who put a higher premium on balance than spin. Study after study by the Media Research Center -- the parent organization of CNSNews.com -- clearly demonstrate both a liberal bias in many news outlets and a frequent double-standard in editorial decisions on what constitutes "news." In response to these shortcomings, MRC Chairman L. Brent Bozell III founded CNSNews.com in an effort to provide an alternative news source that would look for the stories that are too often ignored or under-reported.

World Net Daily
WorldNetDaily.com is a fiercely independent newssite committed to hard-hitting investigative reporting of government waste, fraud and abuse. Founded by Joseph and Elizabeth Farah in May 1997 as an Internet project of the non-profit Western Journalism Center, WorldNetDaily.com, Inc. began operating as a for-profit corporation Oct. 1, 1999. Now a leading Internet news site in both traffic and influence, WorldNetDaily.com has broken some of the biggest, most significant and most notable investigative and enterprising stories in recent years.

Town Hall
Town Hall is the first truly interactive community on the Internet to bring Internet users, conservative public policy organizations, congressional staff, and political activists together under the broad umbrella of "conservative" thoughts, ideas and actions. Town Hall is a one-stop mall of ideas in which people congregate to exchange, discuss and disseminate the latest news and information from the conservative movement. Town Hall is committed to inform, educate and empower the public through this emerging electronic medium. The organizations that have chosen to become citizens of Town Hall do not necessarily agree on every issue, yet that is why Town Hall believes our community is of value. An interactive, open and honest debate of the issues within the conservative community will help us all in the fight against those who would sacrifice the individual and freedom for political gain and big government.

News For Conservatives
The mainstream media claims to be objective, but most conservatives agree that there is a real bias out there against Republicans, and conservatives in general. They often feel like there is nowhere to go to get the news without all of the liberal spin (which the media claims isn't there). This site is dedicated to bringing you the latest news in the world of politics, along with some conservative commentary. Don't look for any liberal biases here.

Chronicles
Chronicles: A magazine of American culture.

Each month Chronicles, edited by Institute president Thomas Fleming, takes a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly of American culture and politics. As original as they are independent, Chronicles' editors have been years ahead in predicting the major conflicts and crises of our time: the end of the Cold War and the rise of "isolationism," the immigration crisis, the worldwide resurgence of ethnic conflict, the collapse of American higher education, and the multiculturalism debate. Some of the best writers in the world have appeared in the pages of Chronicles, Wendell Berry, Jorge Borges, Patrick Buchanan, Samuel Francis, George Garrett, George Gilder, Russell Kirk, John Lukacs, Mario Vargas Llosa, Jacob Neusner, Robert Nisbet, Murray Rothbard, E.O. Wilson. No cant, no propaganda, only honest and entertaining articles, reviews, and essays for readers looking for the truth.

The Rockford Institute
Founded in 1976, The Rockford Institute stands alone among "think tanks" as the authentic voice of the American Heartland. The Institute, informed by the distinctive accents of the Midwest, the South, and the West, defines and shapes national and international debates. We believe that a society in turmoil cannot be saved through mere legislation. Our efforts are devoted not to ephemeral political fashions but to the defense of the fundamental institutions of our civilization. In the broadest sense, we strive to contribute to the renewal of Christendom in this time and place through:

The defense of the family;
The promotion of liberty;
The decentralization of political and economic life;
The celebration of the literary and artistic inheritance of our civilization;
The adherence to Truth, revealed through Scripture and tradition.

The scholars of The Rockford Institute, with their understanding of human history, classical civilizations, and the literature and philosophy of Christendom, concentrate attention on the fundamental experiences of American life - Religion, Family, Education, Culture. In this manner, The Rockford Institute prefers to shape attitudes and opinions rather than to react to events, making history rather than merely reacting to it.

1st Headlines

1stHeadlines was created to provide one convenient central location where a user can quickly scan headlines from many news sources. The headlines listed on 1stHeadlines pages are links to stories on the sites where the stories are located. The goal of 1stHeadlines is to help readers access stories on web sites that they would normally not have time to view on a regular basis and to add value to the news source sites by directing users to these sites who might not otherwise visit these sites. We do not frame the pages of the news sources but instead open a new browser window where the stories can be read and the news sources pages viewed without interference.

Opinion Journal - From the Wall Street Journal Editorial Page
Indeed, we believe that the ultimate function of the editorial pages is the same as the rest of the newspaper, to inform. But in opinion journalism we try to inform on questions to which there is no ultimate ascertainable truth--which is to say, the most interesting questions of life and society. We certainly offer our opinions as something we believe, but we do not offer them as the truth. We recognize that others may disagree, but see little value in equivocation. We hope that in stating our own views forcefully we raise and sharpen the level of debate and knowledge. And we hope that our editorials reflect not merely the passing whim of passing editors, but a body of thought shaped by a century of tradition.

Rightgrrl!

A Rightgrrl fails to support the limiting stereotypes put upon those of us who simply refuse to buy into the pro-choice liberal feminist ideology. We don't purport to enjoy a forced, implausible feminist bond to other women simply because we all support gender equity. More importantly, we don't believe overactive governmental intervention is healthy for our nation's economy. And most importantly, we don't believe the rights of the unborn should be subordinated to the rights of women, simply because we've been historically denied the vote.

The Flight Deck

The Home Page of J. Orlin Grabbe

The mission of orlingrabbe.com and The J. Orlin Grabbe Homepage is to inform and educate the general public regarding:

- the increasing use of the monetary system as a surveillance mechanism, thereby endangering or destroying political and financial freedom;

- the political, technological, and economic forces behind this development (including the war on drugs and the growth of the national security state in the digital age);

- the technologies of political control whereby governments practice the very things they condemn (including money-laundering, drug-dealing, and terrorism) and then (or in order to) invoke the same as justification for enslaving their citizens;

- the technologies, political and economic understanding, and philosphical perspective that a sovereign individual needs to reverse the erosion of his own liberty in this hostile environment.

The Orator
The Media is supposed to be a watchdog. Instead, over the years, it has become more like a parrot, and worse, like Pinocchio. It is evident mainstream media has failed, in large part, to represent truth and fairness. If you don't see that, just click on a couple of links from this site and read the contents of other sites objectively. This web site is about keeping people informed. In doing so, it will hopefully become a forum for public discourse over the issues of this day and ultimately those of the next. It is about interaction for change and for fighting the disease, apathy, that inflicts all Americans in varying degrees. Personal and collective participation in our government is essential for the survival of our personal freedom --- our liberty. Keeping informed can only motivate and enhance that participation.

The Vast Right Wing Conspiracy is a highly effective conglomeration of individuals, groups and corporations who desire to see the United States enter into an era of Glory where government is restrained, people lead their own lives and are solely responsible for them. Where character counts and morality and ethics form the basis of personal choices. "The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left." Ecclesiastes 10:2

The Modern English Collection
This heterogenous collection contains fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, letters, newspapers, manuscripts and illustrations from 1500 to the present, arranged for browsing by author's last name or by category of interest. Each text is encoded in SGML and includes a bibliographic header with details about the creation of the electronic text and its print source.

The Big Eye - Library Resources
A VERY COMPLETE source of online texts!

Project Gutenberg
There are three portions of the Project Gutenberg Library, basically be described as:

(1) Light Literature; such as Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking-Glass, Peter Pan, Aesop's Fables, etc.

(2) Heavy Literature; such as the Bible or other religious documents, Shakespeare, Moby Dick, Paradise Lost, etc.

(3) References; such as Roget's Thesaurus, almanacs, and a set of encyclopedia, dictionaries, etc. The Light Literature Collection is designed to get persons to the computer in the first place, whether the person may be a pre-schooler or a great-grandparent. We love it when we hear about kids or grandparents taking each other to an etexts to Peter Pan when they come back from watching HOOK at the movies, or when they read Alice in Wonderland after seeing it on TV. We have also been told that nearly every Star Trek movie has quoted current Project Gutenberg etext releases (from Moby Dick in The Wrath of Khan; a Peter Pan quote finishing up the most recent, etc.) not to mention a reference to Through the Looking-Glass in JFK. This was a primary concern when we chose the books for our libraries.

The Master Works of Western Civilization
Several publishers, writers, and thinkers have drawn lists of the quintessential works of Western Civilization. This page presents several such lists along with links to the texts available on the Web.

Dr. Mortimer Adler, who edited The Great Books of the Western World at the University of Chicago, believed that by reading his selections you would obtain a thorough liberal arts education.

Great Books Index - List of authors and titles

Note: This great books index is a personal interest project, and is not sponsored by or associated with the Encyclopaedia Britannica corporation. It is not the same list of authors and works that was included in the Great Books of the Western World. Nonetheless it has been suggested and inspired by the work of Robert Hutchins and Mortimer Adler, who were the editors of the 1952 edition of the GBWW. This index is at attempt to guide readers to available online editions of those and other great books.

Urban Legends

An urban legend:

- appears mysteriously and spreads spontaneously in varying forms
- contains elements of humor or horror (the horror often "punishes" someone who flouts society's conventions).
- makes good storytelling.
- does NOT have to be false, although most are. ULs often have a basis in fact, but it's their life after-the-fact (particularly in reference to the second and third points) that gives them particular interest.
